Dear Parents and Carers,

As we draw to the end of half term and our first ever two week October break, I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for your support. We are delighted with the progress our students have made since September, and have been so impressed by their hard work, politeness and participation in both lessons and school life. I have arranged a small treat for every student at the end of the school day today as a 'well done - hard work brings rewards'.

We held our first parent forum of the year on Wednesday. We discussed, amongst a number of topics:

• Communication - further ways to engage parents and carers
• Our school improvement plan and next steps once finalised
• Reporting - ways forward to improve parent understanding of student progress

I have some takeaway tasks and will be reporting back to the group on some of the areas discussed. This will be consultative, with the view to then relay to all parents and carers any updates or changes.

I hope you have a great half term, and we hope to see all students return energised and ready to learn on Monday 4th November.

Sir Roger Fry Visit

Earlier this week, we had the pleasure of welcoming Sir Roger Fry, the founder of King's Group Academies, to KAR. He was joined by our Senior Students, Mr Harvey, and members of the Senior Leadership Team for lunch where the students were invited to ask questions about his life and contributions to education in the UK and abroad.

Change News

It's been a busy week for our Change Ambassadors!

We were proud to have our official first Change committee meeting with our Change Ambassadors and we welcomed new members plus our parent volunteer Sophie Hazelwood. 

On the agenda this week we looked at the environmental review, focusing on the ten Eco School topics to see what we are already achieving and where we can direct our attention on making positive changes. This will inform our action plan as we decide on what projects we will get involved in.  

Our ambassadors had an additional surprise and were straight into action with a visit from Mick, an ITV camera operator, to film us in action participating in the Hidden Nature Challenge as part of signing up to Education Nature Park, a DfE initiative to get children outside and engaging with nature. The school is now on the map with hundreds of other schools and the challenge involved us looking for nature in different places, identifying areas where there was no nature and looking for really unusual sights. There were some great mushrooms and toadstools and a very unusual caterpillar! It's amazing what you can find when you take the time to really look. 

Keep an eye on Edulink, because when we find out when the story will air we will email families so they can watch it.

Design and Technology Department

Year 7 have been busy finalising their Tatty Devine project. They have worked on CAD software to design their necklaces, which then was sent to the laser cutter. Challenging themselves to turn a 2D drawing into layers they had to work out which pieces needed cutting and which needed engraving.   This week they have glued them together and added necklace chains! Well done Year 7! 

After school KS4 club runs Tuesday and Thursdays every week. The workshop is continuously packed by our hard working students and the computer suite with our year 11’s who are working tirelessly on their NEA’s. 

The majority of our year 10’s have now taken their first project of the year home. Fantastic work KS4!

PE Department – Sport Celebrations

• Year 9 girls Netball team won their game against Seaford on Monday - 11-5 
• Year 7 girls Netball team also won their game against Peacehaven on Tuesday 8-0 
• Year 8 girls Netball team drew against Seahaven 5-5 on Tuesday
• We had a cross country competition against all the schools locally. The following students came in the top 10 across all schools for their age groups - Grace Luford Brown (9th), Patrick Ring (4th) and Harry Hunt (5th).

Senior Students' Bede's Trip

Last week, the senior students had a excellent opportunity to visit Bedes school. When they were there, they got to experience a range of team building activities and discuss educational topics with a range of other schools. This opportunity meant that they could talk to other students at different schools about current topics such as diversity, leadership roles and learn how to work as a team with people you have never met before. This was a really amazing experience and one we hope to continue with future senior students as this expands and broadens their horizons, as working with new people is a key skill we want our pupils to learn for the wider world.

Reminder - School Applications due 31/10

Flu Vaccinations

The Immunisation Service is coming into school on Monday 11/11/2024 to offer your child the nasal Flu spray vaccination. You will be sent a consent form for your child individually in the new term to say YES or NO for them to have this vaccine, however you can follow the steps below to complete the form now.

Follow the steps below, before the closing date and time, which is at 11am Wednesday 6th November. If you miss the cut off time, the consent form will reopen after the session, enabling you to submit a form for your child to be offered the vaccination at a catch-up clinic.

Farleys House and Gallery family day

We’d love to invite you to our first free family day for ‘A is for Ant’ on 30^th October 2024

Bringing to life the concept of a children’s alphabet book, ‘A is for Ant’ is the short film debut by renowned British photographer Jack Davison (he’s just shot the cover for British Vogue) in collaboration with Oscar-winning production and costume designer Shona Heath.

Screened outdoors on a three-sided ‘Ant Bus’, this immersive cinematic experience is bookended by a short theatrical performance with puppetry to entertain the whole family. After the film, a collage workshop by resident illustrator Hatty Staniford will inspire audiences to create their own worlds.

We’re thrilled to be hosting the ‘Ant Bus’ during its UK tour over half term and to extend the invitation to Farleys’ first free family day to you. This event is part of our celebration of 75 years since Farleys became a hub for avant-garde artists in 1949. This is our penultimate open day of 2024 and a fantastic opportunity to see Farleys before we close on what has been a remarkable year following the release of Kate Winslet’s ‘LEE’ in cinemas last month. Families are also welcome to explore our Sculpture Garden and exhibitions.

Lewes Children's Book Group

We are holding our 50th Anniversary celebrations at Malling Community Centre on Saturday 26th October and would love to see you there.

We ask children to bring good condition children's books that they no longer want and swap them for another. Note: we have less books for KS4 - but all children are welcome.  

Local author Dawn Casey will also be running activities for children of primary age. 

The event is free of charge.

Part-time Administrator - 24-28 hours per week
Starting Salary £15.75 per hour rising to £17.16 

Ringmer Parish Council is urgently seeking a skilled administrator to work closely with the Clerk to help deliver on the Council’s and Residents’ priorities. The position is for 24 -28 hours per week, with times of attendance to be agreed. Hours will include attendance at some evening council meetings to take minutes.

Ringmer Parish Council is a very proactive and busy Council. Its offices are located at Ringmer Academy. This is a predominantly office-based post, although there may be an opportunity to work from home occasionally.

Duties will be:

To undertake general administration duties in the office including preparing of agendas and supporting papers and producing draft minutes. To attend meetings of the Council and Working Group/Committees to take minutes/notes. To work with the Clerk to implement the decisions of the Council. To deal with day to day enquiries. 

Applicants should have experience with working with Microsoft Packages, be personable and have previous experience of a busy office environment. Knowledge of local government administration and procedures would be an advantage.
