King's Academy Ringmer Weekly Newsletter 27/05/22
This week's message from our principal, Mrs Williams.
What lovely end to the term we have had. Last week we had our usual Lesson legend week, and we had a record number of lesson legends with 688. Well done to all the students who received a commendation. Yesterday was national 'Thank a Teacher Day' (or thank an adult day at Ringmer). We had lots of electronic thank you cards and a number of gifts such cakes from Florence in Year 7 and Asparagus (my favourite!) from Lucy in Year 9. We felt very spoilt.
Year 7 Football
Last night staff and students as we went down to the 3G to support Year 7 boys in their football final against Willingdon. It was so exciting and such a close game. I was so proud of the team who showed excellent team work determination and tenacity They were naturally disappointed to lose 3-2 as they had put their heart and souls into the match BUT we were extremely proud of them, and we WILL win next year!
Year 11 Prom
We are very much looking forward to seeing all our Year 11s at this year’s Prom. My first Ringmer Prom, we know many of you are making plans and talking about it, but we still have few students who have actually committed through booking. Please can you do this in the near future as we need a certain number of students for the event to go ahead.
On the same subject, Prom Dreams in Horsham West Sussex wo specialises in nearly new prom dresses and suits are offering referrals again We appreciate it may be a distance to travel, but there may be savings to have in the long run. Please contact the school directly if you would like to visit the shop as we have to refer you. The website is here: https://www.promdreams.co.uk/

Year 9 GCSE English Literature course
After half-term Year 9 will start their GCSE English Literature course. Their first topic will be Power and Conflict poetry. To aid them with this part of the course, we are offering a Study Guide to be used in lessons and for Independent Learning at a significantly reduced price of £3.40. Please pay via Parent Pay for this as soon as possible as the order will go in at the very start of next half-term.

Year 10 Theatre Trip - 'An Inspector Calls'
We still have many tickets available for this exciting opportunity, which will take place in November. Year 10 are studying this play and the best way to prepare for their GCSE is to watch a live theatre performance. The cost is £27, and we appreciate that this might be a lot to ask for in one go at this difficult time. If you do require financial assistance, please make a request via this link: Financial Support Application
The tickets will be open to purchase until the end of June.
Fabulous feel good fundraiser for Winston's Wish - UPDATE
What a fun lunchtime on May 11th. Our student ambassadors were amazing, they organised and ran stalls selling cakes, cookies and cheese straws, guess the name of the teddy, how many treats in the jars, decorate your own keyrings, how many sweets in the jar and of course the very popular "sponge the teacher". The final amount raised for Winston's Wish was a whopping £181.62 !
I would like to thank the truly wonderful members of staff who put themselves in the line of fire on a rather chilly day to get well and truly soaked by a very large crowd of eager students.
Thank you, Miss Beattie
September 2022 INSET days and start of term for our students
Thursday 1 September and Friday 2 September are both INSET days. The whole school ie: Years 7 to 11 will therefore return on Monday 5 September 2022.
Ukraine Appeal
I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who donated and helped with our Ukraine
Appeal. As you can see from the photos the number of items generously given more than
filled a car. In fact, we took 2 cars up to The Green Man where the items were then passed
on ready for the journey across to the border to be distributed to the people in need. The
kindness and support shown by our community is always hugely appreciated.
Thank you, Miss Beattie
Eco Hub
We have had a very busy term this year. We have been lucky enough to receive funding from The National Lottery, Lewes County Council and Viridor. This has enormously helped the school to purchase recycled plastic picnic benches for the students to enjoy. We have also brought a bird table and a wildlife capture camera. This has proved very popular indeed and the birds are positively swarming onto it! Our next projects include a chalk bank for encouraging butterflies and a moth trap to identify what moths visit the KAR site.
We also had a very successful pond digging day where students, parents and staff cleared lots of weeds and planted native plants and flowers. We are hoping the frogs and pond skaters will find the pond and make it their home.
Our blue hearts are up for ‘No Mow May’ so we have left a strip of grass at the front of the school with a few wildflower seeds mixed in to see what comes up!
This term also marks the end of Mrs Holmes’s job as the Environmental Project Manager. She has raised over £8500 for the Eco Hub and along with Ms Pillar has rejuvenated the school's Eco area! We wish her well in her new role.
Eco club is every Monday lunchtime Week B- everyone is welcome.

Safeguarding
As the term draws to a close, summer is stretching out before us. So we are out later in the evenings and probably going further afield. Make sure parents and carers know where you are, is your phone charged before you set off? Then when you are out and about, always ask yourself the question- If there was an adult I respected present, would I do this?
This also applies on line of course, so my safeguarding message is for you in ANYTHING that you are doing.
If there was an adult I respected present- would I still do this?- if the answer is NO then stop.
Have a good break.
Kind regards
Sian Williams
Principal
